country and preparing for our Annual Conference in November.
This year’s conference, Speaking Up: Language Learning
at Home and Abroad, will be held in Budapest, Hungary, a city
that is speaking up after decades of authoritarian rule. Please

CIEE Annual Conference, November 2003, Budapest,

The CIEE Annual Conference is an event attended by many
faculty and professionals in the field of international educational
exchange. This year’s theme is Speaking Up: Language Learning
at Home and Abroad. Join us in Budapest for sessions such as:

Learning and Beyond Words: The Language of Intercultural Communication.

Reduced “early bird” registration rates will apply until Friday,
October 3rd. Registrations received after October 3rd will be
charged at the regular rate.
Conference registration will be accepted online at www.ciee.org/conference or
by mail (7Custom House Street, Portland, ME 04101), fax (207.553.7699),
and phone (1.800.40.STUDY) until October 17, 2003. After October
17, attendees must register on-site at the CIEE conference registration
desk at the Budapest Marriott Hotel.
Registrations for the Pre-Conference Workshops must
be received by October 17. On-site registration for the workshops
is not available.
October 3 is also the deadline for reserving rooms
at the Budapest Marriott at the CIEE negotiated rates of 115
Euros/single and 125 Euros/double per night. After Friday, October
3, regular hotel rates will apply. Call 011-36-1-266-7000 or

CIEE Study Center application decisions are made on a rolling
basis. Application deadlines for spring 2004 are:

Meet our New Resident Directors!
CIEE is pleased to introduce a number of new Resident Directors
to our Study Centers around the world.
Joy Yamamura is the new Resident Director in

Eero Jesurun has joined our team in Alcala,
Spain, after working in our home office for a number of

As of fall 2003, John Lucas is the Resident
Director in our Alicante, Spain Study Center. Dr. Lucas
is a linguist with 10 years experience in international

New CIEE Study Center in Barcelona
This fall, the CIEE Study Center at the Universitat Pompeu
Fabra in Barcelona received its first group of students.
The Business and Culture Program is designed for students
who have 0-3 semesters of Spanish and a strong interest
in business and economics. Click here for

In the fall of 2004, CIEE will introduce the Humanities
and Regional Studies Program in Barcelona. Students with
advanced Spanish language skills will develop fluency through
direct matriculation in a wide range of disciplines. Learn
