Admissions Update: CIEE Arts and Sciences Program at the University of Cape Town
We have received an unprecedented number of early applications for the CIEE Arts and Sciences Program at the University of Cape Town. If you are in the process of reviewing applications for the spring 2007 program, we ask that you forward these to CIEE as soon as possible for consideration as the program is filling rapidly and there are a limited number of spaces still available.

As you know, CIEE offers two additional programs in South Africa, and we recommend that students indicate a second program option on their application in the event that they are placed on a waiting list. The other CIEE options in South Africa are the Service-Learning Program at the University of Cape Town and the CIEE Study Center at Stellenbosch University. Click here to read Bradley Rink’s latest newsletter from Stellenbosch, also posted on our website.

Note that beginning with the fall 2007 admissions cycle, applications for the Arts and Sciences program will no longer be processed on a rolling basis, but instead reviewed following the application deadline of March 15.

New Teach Abroad Programs in Spain and Chile
CIEE is pleased to launch two new teach abroad programs for 2007: Teach in Chile and Teach in Spain.

The CIEE Teach in Chile program will begin in February 2007 and coincides with the Chilean academic year (February through December). Participants will be placed at local private schools in Santiago, the Universidad de Chile in Santiago, and DuocUC, a non-profit private institution of higher education established in 1968 by the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. In addition to a Bachelor’s degree, participants must have a minimum of 4 semesters of college-level Spanish language or the equivalent to be eligible. To learn more about the new CIEE Teach in Chile program, click here. Please note, the application deadline for 2007 is October 1, 2006.

The CIEE Teach in Spain program will begin in September 2007 and placements will last a full academic year (September through May). Participants will be placed in public schools in the Autonomous Region of Andalusia and will work as classroom assistants, collaborating with local Spanish teachers to develop an authentic bilingual classroom experience for the students. In addition to a Bachelor’s degree, participants must have a minimum of 4 semesters of college-level Spanish language study or the equivalent to be eligible. The application deadline for the 2007 program is April 15, 2007. To learn more about the new CIEE Teach in Spain program, click here.

CIEE and Reed College Collaboration
Each year Reed College hosts seven Language Scholars from partner institutions around the world. This year, CIEE had the great pleasure of working with Paul DeYoung, Director of International Programs at Reed, to identify and recommend both an Argentine and French Language Scholar for the 2006-2007 academic year. These young scholars live in Reed's language houses, support language learning and understanding of other cultures both in the halls and classrooms, initiate new cultural programs, sponsor conversation sessions, tutor students, and present on contemporary life in their homelands. In return, Language Scholars receive housing and meals plus a small stipend and are able to enroll in one course per semester at Reed College.

Silvana Bongiovanni, the Argentine participant, has enjoyed meeting Language Scholar colleagues from China, Russia, Germany, Spain, and France. She looks forward to her work with Reed students and is "in heaven" in the psycholinguistics course in which she has enrolled. CIEE and Reed are thrilled to be collaborating on an initiative that provides exchange opportunities to students from countries that so often play host to our U.S. students.
