CIEE Staff Update

Portland, Maine Office
Meghan Quinn, Manager of Instructional Development, comes to us with a wealth of experience, including English teaching with the JET program in Japan; leading and teaching on Global Quest programs in Thailand; and teaching English and providing educational support in high schools here in Portland. Meghan will report to Mick Vande Berg, Chief Academic Officer and Vice President, Academic Affairs, and work closely with Program Directors and Resident Directors in designing and implementing instructional activities at our Study Centers, in training resident staff, and in assessing student learning.

Please note changes in the CIEE Enrollment Department for Spring 2008:

Chris Bettera continues to advise students going to Asia. His complete portfolio includes China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Taiwan, Thailand, and India.

Megan Gardner continues to advise students studying abroad in Spain and Portugal. However, as CIEE has a very large group of students studying abroad in Spain during the spring semester, Megan will split spring pre-departure advising responsibilities with Russ Phillips. Megan will continue to advise all Spain and Portugal students for the summer and fall enrollment cycles. For spring, Megan will advise spring students going to Alcalá de Henares, Sevilla, and Barcelona.

Russ Phillips continues to advise students going to Latin America and Australia. During the spring enrollment cycle, he will also advise students attending Study Centers in Alicante, Palma de Mallorca, and Madrid, Spain.

Amanda Gilliam continues to advise students going on programs in Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Italy, Ireland, and the United Kingdom.

Kristina Powell advises for our programs in Central and Eastern Europe. Her complete portfolio includes the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Russia. Kristina comes to CIEE from Bowdoin College where she spent a semester studying abroad in Northern India, Nepal, and the Tibetan Autonomous Region (Lhasa).

Victoria Fletcher advises for programs in Botswana, Ghana, Senegal, South Africa, Jordan, and Turkey. While Victoria is a new face in the Portland office, she is not new to CIEE. She spent the last year working as the Resident Coordinator at our Study Center in Dakar, Senegal.

Institutional Relationship Managers - Regional Offices
Trevor Budge, Assistant Manager, Institutional Relationships, joined CIEE in August and is based in Austin, TX. Trevor comes to us from the American Intercontinental University London Study Abroad program where he was an Admissions Advisor. He has a BA in International Studies and Liberal Arts and Sciences from Utah State University where he also worked as a staff assistant in the study abroad office. He has studied abroad in both Mexico and Thailand and spent two years in Ljubljana Slovenia. Trevor will be working with colleges and universities in a region including UT, MT, ND, SD, NE, KS, OK, TX, AR, MS, and LA.

Kristin Amos-Abanyie, Assistant Manager, Institutional Relationships, also joined CIEE in August and is based outside Washington, DC. Kristen has her M.S. in Higher Education Management from the University of Pennsylvania and has a variety of experiences from academic advising at universities to teaching in China. Kristin will work with colleges and universities in the Mid-Atlantic region including PA, DC, MD, WV, VA, and DE.

With Trevor and Kristin joining our team, the regions for our current Institutional Relationship Managers have changed to the following:

Catherine Menyhart, Northeast: ME, NH, VT, MA, RI, CT, NY, NJ
Sue Robinson, Southeast: MO, TN, NC, SC, AL, GA, FL
Kellie Sullivan, West: WA, OR, CA, ID, NV, AZ, CO, NM, WY
Ellen Whitman, Mid-West: MN, IA, WI, IL, MI, IN, KY

CIEE Study Center in Amsterdam
Ruurd (Rudy) Schaap joins us as the new Resident Coordinator for the CIEE Study Center in Amsterdam. Rudy has worked both in the Netherlands and in the U.K. where he worked for IBM. As a Dutch native, having lived abroad in the U.K. and participated as an exchange student to South Africa, Rudy understands what CIEE students experience and is able to help them with their questions regarding the University of Amsterdam and Dutch culture in general.

Passport Update
According to the U.S. State Department, routine processing for passports may take as long as ten to twelve weeks. This is due to the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, a law requiring airline passengers entering the U.S. from within the Western Hemisphere to possess a valid passport.

It has taken many of our students twelve weeks or more to get a new passport. Spring 2008 students need to have their passports by early November in order to apply for a visa. CIEE strongly recommends that they expedite their passport applications. Please remember that passports must be valid for at least six months after the end date of their program.
