CIEE Staff News

Stevan Trooboff, President and CEO
Earlier this year, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN) and Minority Leader Tom Daschle (D-SD) appointed six commissioners to the Lincoln Commission. Among the Frist appointees is Stevan Trooboff, our President and CEO. Also appointed by Senate Majority Leader Frist were William Troutt, President, Rhodes College and Christine Vick, Vice President, The Cohen Group. Daschle appointees include Sen. Richard Durbin (D-IL), U.S. Senate; Brad Heegel, Augustana College; and Douglas Ohmer, Director, Center for Excellence In International Business, Northern State University.

The Lincoln Commission will recommend a significant new program to increase study abroad by American university students. The program, proposed by the late Sen. Paul Simon (D-IL), will provide fellowships to undergraduates to fund study abroad.

John Lucas, Resident Director of the CIEE Study Center in Alicante
John was elected to the Executive Committee of APUNE for the Academic Year 2004-05. Known by its Spanish acronym, APUNE is the official association of U.S. college and university study abroad programs in Spain. APUNE sets the best practices for study abroad in Spain, evaluating member programs once every five years. The organization also represents the interests of nearly 60 U.S. university programs before the Spanish government, and its accomplishments include an agreement to simplify the student visa process in Spain.

APUNE will host the second “Building Bridges” Conference from June 16-18, 2005 in Seville, Spain to bring together officials from Spanish and U.S. educational institutions, consular officials, representatives of both governments, and international education professionals. John’s role on the board will be to supervise the evaluation of member programs and to collaborate in the development of the Building Bridges Conference.

Congratulations to both Steve and John!

New CIEE Publications

New CIEE catalogs for spring 2005, summer 2005, fall 2005, and academic year 2005-06 will be available for download from our website and for shipping the second week in August. Also available are our Work, Teach, and Volunteer brochures, for those students looking for an alternative to study abroad.

Next week you will receive a message with instructions on how to order the new publications and stock your office for the fall!

Scholarships Available for Study in China

The U.S. Department of Education has awarded CIEE funding to provide financial assistance to students participating in the CIEE Study Centers at Peking University (Beijing), East China Normal University (Shanghai), Nanjing University (Nanjing), and National Chengchi University (Taipei). Scholarship applications must be submitted with the program application. Read more about the scholarships and eligibility requirements here. If you have questions about these scholarships, please contact Adam Rubin at 1.800.40.STUDY ext. 611 or by e-mail at ARubin@ciee.org.

Vote While Abroad!

A few weeks ago we sent a message to all fall and academic year CIEE Study Center participants encouraging them to vote in the November elections while abroad. Participants received specific instructions on how to obtain an absentee ballot, and all the steps involved. We hope this reminder will urge them to do so as it's important that their voices be heard.

We also asked them to send an e-mail to their Congressional representative via our advocacy site, www.ciee.org/advocacy.
