CIEE Annual Conference

Online Registration
Online registration for the 2006 CIEE Annual Conference in Seville, Spain is now open at www.ciee.org/conference. Join CIEE and international education leaders and colleagues from around the globe November 8-11, 2006, to discuss ways to maximize student learning outcomes.

The conference will take place at the Barceló Gran Hotel Renacimiento. Download the hotel reservation form and book your room by October 1, 2006 through Viajes El Corte Inglés to secure the reduced conference rate. Additional information regarding hotel reservations can be found here.

Open Houses
On your way to Seville, spend a day at a CIEE Study Center in Spain and learn what your students experience on site with CIEE. Site visits will take place at all CIEE Study Centers in Spain (Alcalá, Alicante, Barcelona, Madrid, Palma de Mallorca, and Seville) and will include meetings with resident staff and students, classroom and housing visits, and more.

Resident Staff

CIEE Study Center in Shanghai, China
Please welcome Justin O’Jack as the new Resident Director of the CIEE Study Center in Shanghai. Justin has a B.A. degree from the Department of History at the University of California, Santa Cruz and received his M.A. degree from the Department of Religious Studies at the Santa Barbara campus, where he is currently pursing his Ph.D. in late medieval Chinese and Tibetan religious traditions. In 1997, Justin began living in Shanghai and worked for a stint in the United States Information Agency in China during President Clinton’s visit to the city, serving as an interpreter and escort for members of the White House Press Corps. As a founding member of the Center for the Analysis of Sacred Space at the University of California, Justin spent six months on a Pacific Rim Research Grant mapping religious sites on Buddhist and Daoist mountains and pilgrimage routes using a handheld GPS. During the last three years, he served as the Academic Director of the Friends World Program in Hangzhou, China. He has lived in China permanently since 2003.

CIEE Study Center in Tokyo, Japan
Steven Houghton is the new Resident Director of the CIEE Study Center in Tokyo, Japan. Steven graduated from Lawrence University in Appleton, WI with a Bachelor’s degree in Spanish and Psychology. Upon graduation, he worked for two years for the Peace Corps in Honduras. He was then accepted into the JET Program and taught English in a small rural junior high school in Nagano Prefecture for three years. In Japan, Steven attended International Christian University as a Rotary World Peace Studies Fellow. He completed his Master’s Degree in Public Administration with an Emphasis on Peace Studies in June of 2006. Before beginning his graduate studies at ICU, Houghton worked for five years at the University of Wisconsin-Superior as an International Student Advisor/Admissions Specialist.

CIEE Study Center in Dakar, Senegal
Victoria Fletcher is the new Program Assistant in Dakar, Senegal. Victoria received her B.A. in English Literature from Kalamazoo College and studied abroad for a year in Dakar. Upon graduating, she joined the Peace Corps and was placed in Tafraout, Morocco, where she taught English. She then returned to Dakar for two years, during which she worked as the internship and study abroad coordinator for a local NGO and completed a 6-month consultancy with the UNICEF West and Central Africa regional office. She is currently pursuing a graduate degree in international education and sustainable development.

Portland Staff


Kellie Sullivan has joined us as Manager, Institutional Relationships for the West Region with an international focus on Asia Pacific. Kellie comes to us with a strong and varied background of managing relationships at Wright Express, Explorica, EF Education, and Sakae Institute, a Japanese educational consultant and placement company. She also taught English as part of the JET program in Amakusa, Japan, and spent time in Mali with the Peace Corps.

Anne Curtis, former Student Services Coordinator at the CIEE Study Center in Prague, is the new Campus Relations Coordinator. In Prague, Anne managed student enrollment records, facilitated orientation and cultural workshops, and worked with advisors visiting the Study Center.

Russell Phillips is the new Enrollment Officer for Latin America and Australia. Russ comes to us from Centers for Academic Programs Abroad (CAPA), where he worked in pre-departure services; advised students about academic courses and internships available; published pre-departure materials; and worked with consulates to obtain student visas. Prior to CAPA, he worked for the National Education Travel Council and for the CIEE Boston office as an Assistant Site Director welcoming students from overseas to the U.S.

You’ll see a new design, one we hope will help you and your students navigate through the study abroad process.

The CIEE website will be fully updated with all 2007 CIEE Study Center program information by Monday, August 7th. Spring 2007 program fees and cost breakdowns will be available on the website on August 15th.
