Rhonda Hinkle-Shabbir, DePauw University

Register Online
Online registration for the 2007 CIEE Conference is now open at www.ciee.org/conference. We hope you can join us in Toronto to discuss this year’s theme, Challenging Assumptions: evaluating study abroad’s past, fashioning its future. We’ll look at where study abroad has been and where it’s going. As we celebrate our 60th year, it seemed an opportune time to reflect and plan for the future. Be sure to register now to receive the early bird rate.

CIEE Staff News

Portland, Maine
Please welcome Sheila Stovall as the Billing Coordinator. Sheila takes over from Chris Wilson who is now the Supervisor of Enrollment Data Services. Sheila comes to CIEE with 15 years of processing and customer service experience in the insurance field. She's a graduate of University of Southern Maine, and also worked at the USM School of Business for three years.

Amsterdam, Netherlands
Eveline Zwikker, Resident Director of the CIEE Study Center in Amsterdam, has left CIEE to pursue a second masters degree, this one in international development. Hannah Huber, previously Assistant Resident Director, will take over as Acting Resident Director of the program beginning with the summer 2007 program.

Prior to joining CIEE in 2005, Hannah Huber worked at the Royal Netherlands Embassy in Washington, DC. Hannah then moved to Amsterdam where she received her master's in American Studies from the University of Amsterdam (UvA) with her thesis: Securing Country or Résumé: The History of Drivers for Study Abroad in the United States. In addition, she holds a minor in Educational Policy and Management from the UvA and a bachelor’s degree from Dickinson College in American Studies. Hannah brings with her a rich background in international educational exchange, having the experience as an exchange student to the Netherlands through the Rotary program and to Italy and England through Dickinson College.

iNext Travel Card

We hope you had a chance to visit the CIEE booth at NAFSA and learn about iNext, the next travel essential. The iNext card offers students a host of insurance coverage, from accident, sickness, and hospital to baggage and document. A 24-hour hotline provides students assistance with emergency and everyday needs, such as medical and travel questions or concerns. Please visit www.inext.com to learn more. If you have specific questions, please call Spencer Jones at 1.207.553.4147.

Teach Abroad

CIEE is pleased to accept applications for our second annual Teach in Chile program. In Chile, CIEE collaborates with several institutions to host American university graduates to teach English for the 2008 Chilean academic school year, starting in late February. These institutions include local private schools in Santiago, Universidad de Chile in Santiago, and DuocUC, a non-profit private institution of Higher Education, established in 1968 by the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. CIEE participants help Chilean students meet their language goals by sharing their native English language skills and cultural backgrounds with them.

The application deadline is September 1, 2007. Click here for specific program information, or e-mail teach@ciee.org.

Passport Delays
According to the U.S. State Department, routine processing for passports may take as long as ten to twelve weeks. This is due to the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, a law requiring airline passengers entering the U.S. from within the Western Hemisphere to possess a valid passport.

It has taken many of our students studying abroad this fall twelve weeks or more to get a new passport. Spring 2008 students need to have their passports by early November in order to apply for a visa. CIEE strongly recommends that they expedite their passport applications. Please help them to remember that their passports must be valid for at least six months after the end date of their program.
