CIEE Academic Consortium Board Elections

Three members were recently elected to serve three-year terms on the CIEE Academic Consortium Board (ACB). Valerie Eastman, Scripps College will begin her first term at the spring 2005 ACB meeting. Al Balkcum, University of Minnesota and Adrian Beaulieu, Smith College were reelected for a second three-year term to the Board. Congratulations!

Nancy Stubbs, University of Colorado at Boulder, an invaluable member of the ACB for the last six years, will complete her term at the fall 2004 meeting in Santa Fe, New Mexico in conjunction with the CIEE Annual Conference. Many, many, thanks to Nancy for her dedication and service to CIEE and the Study Centers.

CIEE Staffing Update

On May 1, Martin Hogan was named Vice President, Programs for CIEE. Martin will oversee the CIEE Study Centers, International Faculty Development Seminars and Experiential Programs – Work, Teach and Volunteer. Martin will also continue in his role as Vice President, External Relations.

External Relations Department
On May 17, Adam Rubin was named Director, Campus Relations. Adam will continue as Admissions Officer for the CIEE Study Centers in the Asia Pacific region and will oversee the other CIEE Admissions Officers, Russell Wright, Hannah McChesney, and Cara Hardy. As you know, Cara will relocate to the CIEE Study Center in Barcelona, Spain this summer. The new Admissions Officer for Spain and Latin America will be announced shortly.

The Campus Relations unit and the Communications unit, headed by Kate Watkins, will constitute the External Relations Department of CIEE.

Enrollment Department
Huey Hsiao, Enrollment Officer, will leave CIEE on June 1 in preparation to pursue a graduate degree in the fall.

Chris Bettera, the new Enrollment Officer for Asia Pacific, Africa, and the Middle East, will join us in June from School Year Abroad in Lawrence, Massachusetts. With SYA, Chris spent half the year traveling for recruitment purposes and the rest of the year making admissions decisions, advising students on their choices, and providing pre-departure assistance. Chris has been the primary contact on SARS issues at SYA, sat on the sidewalk in front of the Italian Embassy waiting for the visa office to open, and talked with parents worried about the Madrid bombings. Prior to joining SYA, Chris taught middle and upper school French at the Darlington School in Georgia and worked as a staff counselor with Concordia Language Villages in Minnesota. Chris graduated with a double major in Psychology and French from St. Lawrence University.

Megan Gardner, Enrollment Assistant, will add enrollment responsibilities for students participating in the CIEE Study Centers in Eastern Europe to her job description. Megan has worked in Enrollment for a year supporting the enrollment department in a variety of ways. Among other projects, she was instrumental in the production of pre-departure forms on the Enrollment Download Center website and also the organization of the mailings of vital documents to all participants. Prior to joining CIEE, Meg graduated from Connecticut College with a degree in Art History and studied abroad in Seville, Spain.
