CIEE Staff News
We would like to bring your attention to some recent staff news here at CIEE:
Adam Rubin
Adam Rubin, a long-time CIEE employee, has accepted the position of Program Director, CIEE Study Centers in Africa, Middle East and Eastern Europe, effective June 12. Adam is well known to many of you. He began his career at CIEE as the Resident Director for the Study Center in Tokyo, a position he held for 8 years. During that time, he successfully transitioned the program to Sophia University, co-taught the core course, and successfully managed a program that grew immensely during his tenure.
With the CIEE organizational move from New York to Maine in 2003, Adam made the move from Tokyo to Portland taking up a key role in the External Relations Department. Over the last 3 years, Adam has been responsible for overseeing a number of cross programmatic External Relations activities and has had chief responsibility for the Asia Pacific program region. We’re delighted that someone with such long and diverse service in the organization will be moving into the Program Director position.
Kelli Boorjian and Russell Phillips
Kelli Boorjian, Enrollment Officer for CIEE Study Centers in Latin America and Australia, has been with CIEE since our move to Maine in 2003. Kelli has recently accepted the position of Senior Insurance Officer with the CIEE Boston office and will begin in her new position in late May.
Russell Phillips has been hired as the new Enrollment Officer for Latin America and Australia, and his first day in the office will be Tuesday, June 6th. Russ comes to us from CAPA (Centers for Academic Programs Abroad) in Boston, where he worked in pre-departure services for the past two years. Before working at CAPA, Russ worked for the National Education Travel Council and spent time working for the CIEE Boston office as an Assistant Site Director welcoming students from overseas to the U.S.
John Lucas
Dr. John Lucas, Resident Director of the CIEE Study Center in Barcelona, Spain, recently published an article entitled "Tempting Fate: The Case against Astrology and the Catalan Response" in the Catalan Review. John’s paper applies Valerie Flint's thesis about the adoption of astrology and derivative forms of prognostication by the medieval Catholic Church to Catalan treatises on astrology. Two main arguments against the practice of magic in the Middle Ages actually favored the development of astrology and astrological magic. By demonstrating that astrology does not subjugate free will to celestial bodies or contravene God's authority, Christian astrologers smuggled it into the mainstream of scientific practice. This paper revels how Catalan scholars contributed to this defense, providing textual evidence from the thirteenth to the late fifteenth centuries.
