News from Abroad: Dakar, Senegal
We are often impressed with what students can accomplish while studying abroad. Students at the CIEE Study Center in Dakar, Senegal took what they learned in class to a new level. After discovering that there is an unequal access to resources between the genders in Senegal, and deciding that the gap was due to the difference in education between men and women, they went about changing that for future generations.
They created CIPFEM: Centre International pour la Promotion du Leadership Féminin (International Center for the Promotion of Female Leadership). CIPFEM targets girls aged 9-14, who constitute the demographic most prone to dropping out of school. The vision of this program is that every woman in Senegal will have the resources and support needed to pursue her education. Thus, the next generation of women will be empowered to improve their status.
