CIEE Resident Director David Simmons Receives Award
Dr. David Simmons, Resident Director of the summer program in Santiago, Dominican Republic, is a 2004 recipient of the Joseph F. Wall Service Award from Grinnell College. The award "provides financial support for selected graduates to engage in a period of service in projects, programs, and organizations that are dedicated to improving the lives of others."
With the award money, David will build a multi-purpose community center in the Haitian agricultural worker community where he works. David is also a Principal Investigator for the Program in Infectious Disease and Social Change, Department of Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School. His work focuses on the relationship between human rights abuses and health outcomes with Haitian agricultural workers in the Dominican Republic.
The center will provide much-needed services to a community that is without most basic services. The center will contain a small library with a couple of computers, a meeting room, a consultation room, a small dormitory, and office.
