CIEE Study Center in Havana, Cuba
The CIEE Study Center in Cuba at the University of Havana will re-open for the Spring 2005 semester. Students will be able to choose from three types of courses: a required CIEE core course, Spanish language courses for foreigners, and University of Havana courses. CIEE is partnering with the University of Rochester to deliver the program. The University of Rochester has been issued a travel license by the U.S. Department of Treasury, which authorizes travel related specifically to participants at the CIEE-administered Study Center in Havana. CIEE is developing this program with the University of Rochester, and additional announcements will be sent to you as soon as they are available.

CIEE Alicante Students Write and Publish “El Boletín”

This semester, Alicante Liberal Arts students enrolled in the course “Advanced Spanish Composition” are not only improving their written Spanish, but providing their peers with important cultural information.

Through their bi-monthly publication, “El Boletín” (The Newsletter), the class provides their fellow CIEE students with information about Alicante, Spain, and the CIEE Study Center. Under the direction of their professor, Maria Teresa del Olmo, the students publish articles on current events in Spain, such as the recent presidential election, and cultural festivals such as Easter; editorials; movie, concert and museum reviews; event listings; and summaries of their trips throughout Spain and Europe.

CIEE Summer 2004 International Volunteer Projects Now Available
Your students can join a group of 10 to 20 other volunteers from around the world. They’ll spend 2-4 weeks working, living, and having fun together, and make a long-lasting contribution to the international community. Go to www.ciee.org/volunteer to view the database of more than 500 projects in over 25 countries.

CIEE is constantly striving to add new destinations to our portfolio of volunteer opportunities, and this year we are happy to introduce Thailand as a new option. Other destinations may include Ghana, South Africa, Nepal, India, and Guatemala. Please consult the CIEE website for ongoing updates in the coming weeks, and please let your students know about this wonderful summer opportunity. For more information on our volunteer or other experiential programs, please contact Russell Wright, Admissions Officer, at 1.800.40.STUDY ext. 609.

CIEE Announces Staff Change
Effective this fall, Cara Hardy will join the staff at the CIEE Study Center in Barcelona as Assistant Resident Director. Cara will work closely with Antonia Ferriol, Resident Director, to ensure this growing program meets the needs of your students.

Cara has worked with CIEE’s Spain and Latin America programs for four and a half years, moving from Program Assistant to Program Advisor, Latin America, to Program Officer, Spain, Mexico and Costa Rica to her current position as Admissions Officer for Spain and Latin America. In addition, Cara has been taking classes at Middlebury College to obtain her Master’s degree in Spanish. We’re delighted to have her expertise at this new CIEE Study Center!
