CIEE Study Center Update: Lima, Peru
Students at the new CIEE Study Center in Lima, Peru are having a wonderful time so far this semester. Read briefly about their excursion to Cuzco below, and click here
to read a detailed update on program activities this spring.
Although we have had various excursions here in Lima, the highlight of the semester so far was our trip last week to Cuzco, the sacred city of the Incas. Because it is the most touristed city in Peru we were careful not to fall into the usual tourist traps and organized tours. On the first day we were lucky enough to have a private concert and lecture by a well-know Cusqueño musician, Kike Pinto. He invited us to his small museum of musical instruments and explained the history of music in Cuzco and Peru. After, he played a concert using over twenty different types of instruments, indigenous to Peru.
On Thursday we visited the school, Wiñaypaq, in the Sacred Valley outside of Cuzco. The school is bilingual and bicultural in Spanish and Quechua and it aims to integrate the two main ethnic populations in the area of Cuzco. We were welcomed by the teachers and students with a gathering and concert. After the concert we went to various classrooms to help the teachers.
Friday was dedicated exclusively to Machu Picchu, the most famous archeological site in South America and currently in the running for the new 7 wonders of the world. The scenery and the site itself were truly astounding. One student assured us that it was the most beautiful place he had ever been.

CIEE and PUCMM Celebrate Twenty Years of Collaboration: 1987-2007
CIEE began development of its first study abroad program in Latin America in the mid-1980s as a result of interest from several U.S. institutions. In 1987, the CIEE Study Center in Santiago, Dominican Republic opened with the enthusiastic cooperation of the Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM).
CIEE opened the summer Community Health program in 1996 and the Service-Learning program in the spring of 2007. Through these three programs, CIEE has sent more than 1,000 students to study abroad at PUCMM in Santiago, Dominican Republic.
