CIEE Announces Staff Changes
CIEE Study Center in Santiago, Dominican Republic

Beginning with the fall 2004 program, Dr. Lynne Guitar will be the CIEE Resident Director in Santiago, Dominican Republic. Dr. Guitar earned an M.A. in History in 1994 and a Ph.D in Colonial Latin American History and Anthropology in 1998 at Vanderbilt University. She has taught courses at both Vanderbilt University and Florida International University. Her research interest focuses on Dominican culture from its origins among the Taíno Indians, African and Spaniards in the 15th and 16th centuries through the modern day. She has extensive experience in the Dominican Republic having visited the island in 1986 to research a historical novel, again in 1992 as a summer exchange student at PUCMM, and as a Fulbright Fellow in 1997 to complete her doctoral work. For the past six years, she has been a history and literature professor at the American School of Santo Domingo. In addition, she has been an educational guide of the Colonial Zone in Santo Domingo, Santo Cerro and Concepción de la Vega for student groups, including participants of our CIEE Study Center in Santiago, Dominican Republic.

Dr. Kimberly Eison Simmons, CIEE Resident Director, will be leaving her post on July 1, 2004. Kimberly has accepted a tenure-track position in the Anthropology and African American Studies departments at the University of South Carolina in Columbia. She will continue to do research in the Dominican Republic on racial identity formation, gender, social class, and social change and hopes to publish a book manuscript of her dissertation, " Reconfiguring Dominicanness: Competing Discourses Surrounding Race, Nation, and Identity in the Dominican Republic".  Kimberly's enthusiasm, friendly nature and genuine interest in student welfare have been admired by both students and colleagues alike. CIEE would like to recognize and thank Kimberly for her efforts to grow and continually improve the program over the past four years.

CIEE is pleased that Dr. David Simmons will continue to be the Resident Director of the summer public health program in Santiago. For more information on the CIEE Study Center in Santiago click here.
