CIEE Study Center in Sao Paulo, Brazil
As of Spring 2004, the CIEE Study Center in Sao Paulo,
Brazil, has relocated to the Pontifícia Universidade Católica
(PUC). PUC was founded in 1946 and has 22,000 students and
roughly 2,000 professors and is considered one of the best
universities in Brazil. In terms of research and development,
PUC is ranked first in obtaining financial resources from Fundação
de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP). PUC maintains
a research tradition, which is unique among private institutions
of higher learning in Brazil. Among PUC’s well-known intellectuals
are Paulo Freire (a famous educational theorist) and Floretan
Fernandes (sociologist who was instrumental in the creation
of the Worker’s Party).
For the past three semesters, CIEE students have
taken courses at PUC and have reported that they are happy with
the courses, especially those in international relations, government,
and other areas of social sciences and humanities. Students also
enjoy the fact that the PUC campus is smaller and it is an easy
transition into university life. In addition, the international
office at PUC offers strong administrative support to all international
students, including CIEE students.
In addition to the Portuguese language course and
the Brazilian Issues and Realities course required during the
semester, students choose two to three elective courses. One
newly created CIEE course is “Cultural Manifestations and Social-Political
Conflicts in Brazil”, taught by Dr. Zilda Yokoi, a well-respected
and highly-evaluated professor in the Department of Social History
at USP. In addition, students may enroll in a wide range of courses
offered at PUC for which they meet the prerequisites. The departments
include: Accounting, Anthropology, Business Administration,
Economy, Geography, History, International Relations, Literature,
Politics, Sociology and Tourism.
