Visit a CIEE Study Center
Do you want to learn more about CIEE Study Center programs in Spain? Consider joining us on a CIEE site visit to Madrid, Alcalá de Henares, and Palma de Mallorca to learn about the academic programs and locations, meet on-site CIEE staff and faculty, and speak with students about their experience with CIEE. These programs are geared to advanced students and while we realize you may have visited these cities before, on a site visit you’ll acquire a better understanding of the culture in which the programs operate.

The registration deadline for the site visit to Spain is March 1. Click here for information about registration and if you have questions, please contact Ellen Whitman Stoddard at estoddard@ciee.org.

Admissions Update: CIEE Study Center in Santiago, Dominican Republic: Summer Community Health
We have received a great number of early applications for the Community Health summer program at the CIEE Study Center in Santiago, Dominican Republic. If you are in the process of reviewing applications for the summer 2008 program, we ask that you forward these to CIEE as soon as possible, as the program is filling rapidly and there are a limited number of spaces available.

CIEE offers many other summer programs in Latin America, including the new summer Public Health program in Buenos Aires, Argentina. We strongly recommend that students indicate a second choice option on their application in the event they are placed on a waiting list.

If you have any questions, please contact Libby Lauze, Manager, Enrollment, at 1.800.40.STUDY ext. 4141 or via e-mail at elauze@ciee.org.

Ping Matching Grants
CIEE is pleased to announce the establishment of the Ping Matching Grants. These charitable grants, funded through a small endowment, are named for Dr. Charles Ping, a former Chairman of the CIEE Board of Directors.

The Ping Matching Grants were established to support organizations or companies near a CIEE Study Center in carrying out new activities to benefit their local community. CIEE Study Centers are located in 50 cities around the world, hosting summer, semester, and academic year programs for U.S. college students. CIEE students gain valuable knowledge, skills, and insight through studying outside the U.S. The Ping Matching Grants allow these students, and CIEE, to give something back to the communities in which they study.

The first three recipients of the Ping Matching Grants were the Shem Women’s Group: Running Water project (Daiqian, Tibet); Centro de Educación Creativa/Cloud Forest School: Computer Lab and Playground project (Monteverde, Costa Rica); and the Escuela Ministro Zenteno: Language Laboratory project (Viña del Mar, Chile).

Applications are submitted to CIEE Resident Staff around the world. For additional information, please contact Michael Vande Berg, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Chief Academic Officer at mvandeberg@ciee.org.

CIEE Study Center Updates

Madrid, Spain
In fall 2008, in the spirit of the Bologna accord, schedule changes will occur at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. As a result, fall students at the CIEE Study Center in Madrid should not expect to enroll in regular university courses. However, they will be able to enroll in humanities seminars for credit alongside Spanish students. In spring and fall 2009, this will not be an issue as the Spanish academic calendar will have shifted and will be similar to the U.S. academic calendar. Students on the new Legal Studies program in Madrid will be able to take direct enrollment classes during fall 2008. If you have any questions, please contact Megan Gardner, Enrollment Officer, at 1.800.40.STUDY ext. 4104.

Barcelona, Spain: Architecture and Design
Recently CIEE students on the Architecture and Design program at the CIEE Study Center in Barcelona visited the contemporary landmark Torre Agbar, the office building of the Agbar (Aguas de Barcelona) Water Company, designed by French Architect Jean Nouvel. The building has been very controversial because of its shape, colors, and the area where it is located, 22@Barcelona, an area under renovation and transformation in hopes of becoming the future Barcelona communications and technology district.

Torre Agbar is closed to the public, but CIEE students were allowed to visit the building privately, on a guided tour led by the Director of Institutional Relations and Corporate Reputation of the Water Company. CIEE students were accompanied by their Architecture and Town Planning professors and the CIEE Resident Director, Magdalena Bernaus.

Read what one student had to say about her experience:

I really appreciated the wonderful opportunity to visit Torre Agbar. I don't know how you and CIEE were able to do that, but it was a once in a lifetime chance that I will never forget. It was simply amazing and I'm glad for the experience.

—Danielle Daguio, Fordham University
