Enrollment Update: CIEE Study Center in Cape Town, South Africa

Please note new admissions procedures for the Arts and Sciences program at the CIEE Study Center at the University of Cape Town. Beginning with fall 2007 admissions, CIEE will no longer review applications for this program on a rolling basis, but will instead do a competitive review of all applications received following the March 15 application deadline.

This move to a competitive admissions process was prompted by the immense popularity of the Arts and Sciences program at the University of Cape Town and the limited number of students that the program can accommodate. We believe that a competitive admissions process will continue the CIEE tradition of a high-quality academic program at the University of Cape Town, and will be the fairest process possible to assign the available spots on the program. As always, we encourage you and your students to send in application materials in advance of the deadline.

Complete applications will be reviewed based on the following criteria: grade point average, previous coursework in African studies, and a well-written personal statement specifically addressing the questions noted in our application instructions and found at http://www.ciee.org/study/apply.aspx.

We expect to have many qualified applicants for the Arts and Sciences program at the University of Cape Town. In the case that we are unable to accommodate all of the qualified and interested applicants, we will create a waitlist. Applicants will be notified of an acceptance decision in the week following March 15.

If you have any questions related to this process, please contact Libby Lauze, Manager, Enrollment at 1.800.407.8839 ext. 641 or elauze@ciee.org.

Program Dates: Summer and Fall 2007 CIEE Study Centers
Program dates for summer and fall 2007 CIEE Study Center programs will be available on our website on Thursday, February 15.

CIEE Study Center Spotlight: Palma de Mallorca, Spain

Many of you are undoubtedly advising students on study abroad locations throughout the Spanish-speaking world. Palma de Mallorca, Europe’s top tourist destination, may not be the first place that comes to mind for a summer, semester, or year of academic study. The CIEE Study Center at the Universitat de les Illes Balears is, however, an ideal location for students interested in improving their advanced Spanish language skills and becoming truly integrated into Spanish university life.

The CIEE Study Center in Palma de Mallorca is designed for students with 5 or more semesters of college-level Spanish and a GPA of 2.75 or higher. During the semester, students directly enroll in two or three regular university courses, selected from an array of academic disciplines in the humanities, business, and social sciences. In addition, students enroll in a CIEE advanced language course and a CIEE content course. Courses are complemented by coordinated site visits, films, and community-based projects. Students may also choose to participate in an internship.

Please encourage your students to apply to the CIEE Study Center in Palma. If you have any questions about the program, please contact Ellen Whitman, Manager, Institutional Relationships at 1.800.407.8839 ext. 608 or via e-mail at ewhitman@ciee.org.

CIEE is pleased to announce the third installment of the Knowledge series, mailing to campuses in early March. The Our View Series
Be on the lookout for the latest installment in the Our View series, Mirror, Mirror on the Wall, which will begin arriving on campuses this week. This essay is devoted to the importance of independent evaluation. Click here to read the full essay.

As always, please e-mail with us comments or suggestions for future topics at editor@ciee.org.
