CIEE Study Center in Paris – Critical Studies Program Update
Due to changes to the University of Paris calendar, which were announced last week, it has become necessary to change the calendar and structure of the CIEE Critical Studies program, beginning with the fall 2006 semester. The major change to the program is that housing will now included in the program fee and students will no longer be responsible for finding their own housing.

In addition, the program calendar has changed. The fall semester will now run from late August – mid-December (instead of mid-August – late January) and the spring, early January to mid-May. The academic year will run from late August – mid-May. Our website has been updated to reflect these changes and the new program fees have been posted.

If you have questions, please contact Catharine Scruggs, Program Director, Western Europe, at cscruggs@ciee.org.

CIEE Annual Conference: Proposal Deadline February 1
Proposals for the CIEE Conference in November have been streaming in, but there’s still time to submit a session proposal for the CIEE Annual Conference in Seville, Spain November 8-11, 2006. This year’s theme, Making the Most: Seizing Every Opportunity to Learn Abroad, focuses on student learning outcomes. How can we ensure students are making the most of their study abroad experience? What tools (homestays, volunteer opportunities) will help facilitate this? Click here for instructions on how to submit a proposal and e-mail your proposal to conference2006@ciee.org today!

CIEE-Sponsored Science and Engineering Report
In 2001, CIEE commissioned a working party to research why science and engineering students are under represented in study abroad programs. Their task was to

  • Identify barriers to study abroad
  • Propose strategies to overcome these barriers
  • Discuss ways to achieve a better fit between study abroad and existing curricula
  • Identify fields in science and engineering that have most to gain from study abroad
  • Review CIEE's activities in science related to study abroad

Click here to read the report presented to CIEE, recently posted to our website.

New: Internships at the CIEE Study Center in Madrid
The CIEE Study Center in Madrid has recently added an internship component to its course offerings. Meant to give students a more hands-on experience and a closer look at the realities of contemporary Madrid, they can choose one of four subjects for a semester-long internship:

• Community Service or English Teaching
• Media/Journalism
• Government/Politics/Business
• Arts

The combination of the internship and courses at the Universidad Carlos III will allow students to completely immerse themselves in Spanish culture.

CIEE Summer Programs
Are some of your students only able to study abroad during the summer? CIEE offers 17 summer programs, which run from two to nine weeks to fit any summer schedule.

New this year is a May session of the Language and Culture program at the CIEE Study Center in Seville, Spain. Now offering three sessions (students can attend one, two, or all three), the program focuses on two areas: Spanish language and Spanish culture and history. Special emphasis is placed on Andalusia and its capital Seville, within a European context.
