Propose a Session for our Annual Conference in Seville, Spain
Session proposals for the CIEE Annual Conference in November are due February 1st. This year’s theme is Making the Most: Seizing Every Opportunity to Learn Abroad, which will focus on maximizing student learning outcomes. Information on proposing a session can be found here.

The CIEE Annual Conference is an excellent way to meet colleagues and leaders in the field of international education. Enhance your experience by being a presenter, not just an attendee. E-mail your proposal to conference2006@ciee.org today!

Bonaire: Tropical Marine Ecology and Conservation Program
Do you have a committed science major who wants to study abroad but can’t find the right program? Consider the CIEE Study Center in Bonaire. This tropical marine ecology and conservation program integrates lectures, field experience, student group work, and readings. Emphasis is placed on hands-on field observation of ecological processes, both on land and underwater, as well as human-nature interactions and their application to the conservation of natural and cultural resources.

Visit our website for more information on the semester and summer programs in Bonaire.

CIEE Staff Update
Effective January 2nd, we have implemented some organizational changes at CIEE. We anticipate that these changes will improve service to students and advisors and will allow us to devote additional time to Academic Affairs.

Molly Donovan, who has been managing Enrollment Services, has now assumed the leadership of External Relations as well. Her new title is General Manager, External Affairs.

Mick Vande Berg, who had been heading up Academic and External Relations, has now moved full time into the Chief Academic Officer position that Bill Cressey had occupied. Bill is working part time and will officially retire this summer, but continues to work on special projects in the meantime.

Avian Flu Update
CIEE is closely monitoring the news about influenza A subtype H5N1 commonly known as Avian Flu. While there are as yet no reported cases of human to human transmission, we none-the-less believe that it is important for us to be vigilant and exercise caution in areas where poultry to person transmission is possible. We believe, as do most authorities, that the risks are as yet low and it is possible to continue to study abroad in safe and healthy environments. But, in any situation like this, it is important for students to exercise care and for all of us to reinforce the things they should be doing in these regards. And, we’ll continue to update you from time to time as we have more information.

CIEE Professor Publishes
Karen Masters, a professor at the CIEE Study Center in Monteverde, Costa Rica, is one of ten authors of a paper featured in this week's Nature Magazine on the disappearance of frog species throughout Central and South America. The article links the disappearance to a fungal disease and climate change. Karen discussed the findings on Good Morning America, World News Tonight, and Nightline this week.

Teach in Thailand Application Deadline Extended
CIEE is pleased to extend the application deadline for our Teach in Thailand program to February 21, 2006. An exceptional opportunity for recent graduates, or for those graduating this spring, CIEE Teach in Thailand and Teach in China programs offer individuals a unique and affordable opportunity to live and work in these fascinating countries and to gain insight into the life and culture in a way no traveler could.
