Academic Consortium Board Evaluation
CIEE Study Center in Valparaíso, Chile

As you know, the CIEE Academic Consortium Board (ACB) is the official governing body of the Academic Consortium and is charged with providing quality review and direction for all CIEE study abroad programs. The mission of the ACB is to ensure that CIEE provides, on behalf of the Academic Consortium, distinctive international academic programs of high quality. As a result, the ACB conducts comprehensive evaluations of CIEE Study Center programs. From time to time we will highlight a recent evaluation. Please note that all evaluations are available on our website here. Read below to learn more about the CIEE Study Center in Valparaíso, Chile.

In Spring 2003, an ACB Evaluation Team completed an evaluation of the CIEE Study Center in Valparaíso, Chile. The Team consisted of:

Kathleen Sideli, Associate Director of the Office of Overseas Study, Indiana University
Cristina Sanz, Associate Professor and Director of Intensive Spanish, Georgetown University
Juan Carlos Toledano, Assistant Professor of Hispanic Studies, Lewis & Clark College

According to the report, the evaluation team was impressed with numerous aspects of the program and thought these reflected the best characteristics of the optimum study abroad experience:

  • mature students with a strong language background and seriousness of purpose, prepared to spend a full semester or year abroad
  • a superb physical setting in a vibrant urban environment
  • a stimulating intellectual and political atmosphere
  • a thorough pre-session and a culturally-focused core course with experiential components
  • attentive and caring host families
  • direct integration in classes at a receptive host institution of high quality
  • expert program administration

Seville Language and Society Students Meet the Mayor
This fall, three students from the CIEE Study Center in Seville’s Language and Society Program had the opportunity to meet the Mayor of Seville, Don Alfredo Sánchez Monteseirín, as part of their class: Spanish Language Skills and Communication taught by Óscar Ceballos and José Luis Martínez Martín.

Kathleen Long from Towson University and Andrew Furgeson from Pomona College interviewed the mayor while Christopher Dempsey, also from Pomona College, served as the official photographer.

The students spent an hour with the mayor and their conversation touched on topics such as Seville’s popularity as a study abroad destination, Seville’s role within Spain and the world in general, safety, the local economy and development, and of course, soccer.
