UAE - Intersections of Business & Culture in the UAE

Traditionally, the United Arab Emirates (UAE)—and Dubai in particular—have maintained a closed-door policy to the external world. Forty years ago, Dubai was a small fishing village dependent on pearl diving and trade with Iran and India. Tourism was discouraged, and investment in the development of education, healthcare, industry, and finance were encouraged only to cater to the needs of the local population and workforce. Today, under the leadership of the current emir, Dubai is a hub linking the East and West. During this seminar, we’ll explore the vibrant city that has sprouted from the desert and is now open to all nationalities, and fast becoming a player in the global economy. We’ll also examine the factors that have helped transform the UAE into the country it is today, and the impact rapid change has had on local social and cultural norms.
