Program Overview
Program Overview
An increased focus on healthcare and community health has led Thailand to an integrated system of health promotion. The country had been uniquely successful in its efforts to eliminate HIV/AIDS, its universal healthcare system, instituted in 2002, promotes health through community health volunteers and health centers as well as higher level hospitals, and health promotion has significant support from the Foundation of Thailand, academic endeavors, and community efforts. However, Thailand still faces several health-related challenges including an increase in chronic diseases, the emergence of unique tropical diseases, and a continued struggle with tuberculosis, and malaria. Participants will explore this unique healthcare system and its health promotion efforts through lectures by public health faculty at Khon Kaen University, exchanges with village health volunteers, healthcare workers, administrators, and patients, and site visits to hospitals, the Ministry of Public Health, and a temple that provides traditional medicine to cancer patients.
