Program Overview

Program Overview

Tanzania - Public Health Realities on the Urban to Rural SpectrumFrom widespread illnesses to gaps in healthcare infrastructure and funding, Tanzania is actively combating significant public health issues. The Tanzanian government relies heavily on foreign donors to fill budget gaps, and health services and facilities are often supplemented by foreign-run non-governmental organizations. While some strides are being made at the urban level to address these issues, there continues to be a concerning lack of access to healthcare in rural communities, particularly those in remote areas of the country. During this seminar, we’ll look closely at Tanzania’s health policies and realities through visits to health facilities in a major city, a small town, and a village; we'll identify challenges in healthcare implementation that exist at all levels; and consider solutions on how to fill the current healthcare gaps.

Program Activities

Program Activities

Lectures, dialogues, and community engagement:

Participants will discuss a theoretical framework through which to understand policy initiatives needed to identify existing gaps and valuable linkages in Tanzania’s healthcare system. Participants will hear from academics who are researching these issues and will have significant access to public health officials, non-governmental organization workers, patients, and facility administrators. This seminar will explore the level at which access and services begin to taper off, posing the question “Where does the trickle-down effect of policy initiatives begin to dilute?”

Program Objectives

Program Objectives

During this seminar, participants will:

  • Observe and volunteer in local health facilities (urban and rural) to gain firsthand insight into current public health policies and initiatives.
  • Identify the levels at which health systems begin to break down and, in particularly, the level at which beneficiary access to healthcare resources becomes scarcer.
