Program Overview

Program Overview

barcelona international faculty development seminars architecture

Art and architecture are inextricably linked in Barcelona today, in large part due to the impressive transformation the city underwent between 1870 and the 1930s. Barcelona became one of the chief centers of European visual culture, home to artists and architects such as Antoni Gaudí, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, and Joan Miró. During this seminar, we’ll explore the political, social, and cultural context that made it possible for Barcelona to jump from being a provincial town to a dynamic artistic and architectural center in Europe. We’ll discuss art and architecture that best reflect the nourishing and inspiring power of the city and its region. And we’ll debate the role of Barcelona-related artists and architects in shaping the present-day international perception of the city as a hub for art and architecture.
