Islam is a religion that is deeply implanted in Senegalese and West African cultures. Since its introduction into this part of the African continent, it has played an important role in shaping identities and transforming societies. During this seminar, we’ll examine the evolution of Islam in Senegal and West Africa by looking at issues germane to the relationship between Islam and African societies. We will pay particular attention to the development of Sufi movements and their impact on society and government and on the complex relationship that exists between Islam, citizenship, and geopolitics.
