Hurricane Irene Approaches U.S. East Coast

As Hurricane Irene makes its way to the east coast, CIEE wants to provide some useful information on what to do if your community is affected. We will continue to post updates to the CIEE website and provide email updates and news that will be helpful to you. You can also call CIEE at 1-888-268-6245 at any time if you have questions about the storm. Please see below for helpful safety tips in preparation for the storm’s arrival:

  • Stay informed. Watch local news for storm updates. If Hurricane Irene is a serious threat to your community, evacuation instructions will be provided on the local news networks. You may also view updates on Hurricane Irene on the National Weather Service website.
  • The American Red Cross may arrive in your community if the hurricane does happen. They are an excellent emergency response organization and we ask you to look at their website to learn their latest news on the storm: http://www.redcross.org/.
  • Local authorities or the Red Cross may organize storm shelters for your safety. These shelters are excellent places to go, even if you only have questions. If there is a shelter available and the hurricane will be in your area, CIEE strongly advises you to go there for your safety.
  • Please know the police and fire departments are friendly and they will help you in an emergency situation.
  • Prepare yourself. CIEE encourages you to read more about hurricanes on the National Weather Service and the Red Cross websites. They offer excellent ideas for how to safely prepare for a hurricane storm.
  • Ask your employer if Hurricane Irene will affect your town if you’re not sure. Your employer may have experienced these storms in the past and will be able to tell you what to expect and what to do.

In the event that you must move to a temporary shelter, and if you have access to email or a telephone, please let us know where you are and that you are safe. If necessary, we will notify your CIEE agent in your home country so that they can notify your parents. You can email us at contact@ciee.org or call us, toll-free, at 1-888-268-6245.

Succeeding at your Internship

Expectations—Before You Arrive

Before beginning your internship, think about what you and your host organization hope to get out of it. A good way to do this is to review your DS-7002 Training/Internship Placement Plan and be sure that you fully understand all of its contents. The goals and objectives of your program are listed in this document, along with your daily tasks. While the plan may not cover the entirety of your training program, and there may be changes once you begin, this document should outline what you can expect from your training.

It is important to begin your program with an understanding of what your own expectations are and a willingness to understand that your host organization’s expectations might be different. Have an open-mind and be flexible.

Your First Day

You will likely complete employment paperwork on your first day, so you will need to bring your travel documents to show that you are authorized to work in the U.S.

Your Host Organization may ask you for your Social Security Number. If you do not have one yet, you should provide a copy of your application receipt, and provide your Social Security Number as soon as you have it.

Your Host Organization should be aware that you can start training and receive a paycheck without an actual Social Security Number. If this is not the case, you should give them a copy of the Legal Opinion Letter and Dear Host Organization Letter which can be found in the Forms section. If they still have questions, contact CIEE for assistance.

After Beginning Your Internship

As a participant on this program you have accepted a position with a host organization. An important point to keep in mind is that you are expected to do your very best to make this program work. You should make an effort to adjust to the environment and do your very best to complete the tasks assigned to you.

You should maintain open communication with your supervisor and colleagues at your host organization. If you simply ask, your supervisor will be happy to let you know what goals you should be striving for. Not only that, but your supervisor will appreciate your willingness to communicate about your program.

You Will Be Expected To:

  • Fulfill the terms of your DS-7002 Training/Internship Placement Plan, take direction from your supervisors, and complete all tasks assigned to you.
  • Maintain a positive attitude and show enthusiasm about your position.
  • Do your best to work well with your colleagues.
  • Dress appropriately for your work environment.
  • Be on time. You should demonstrate that you are serious about your program by arriving at (or earlier than) the time indicated by your supervisor. Your hours may also vary depending on the needs of your host organization and your training schedule.
  • Be open to a different type of working environment than you may be used to.

If You Experience Problems At Your Host Organization:

You should discuss problems you are experiencing with your supervisor. If you feel that your host organization is not meeting the basic conditions of your DS-7002 Training/Internship Placement Plan or if you are not having the experience you expected, you should do your best to address these issues with your supervisor. Many times, issues that arise are simply a result of a miscommunication.

If at any time you feel that you cannot work things out with your supervisor or you are not comfortable at your internship, you should contact CIEE at 1.888.268.6245.
