volunteer opportunities

All students are required to participate in service and/or internship activities. There is a wide range of volunteer programs for their choice depending on the student's level of Spanish. An average of fifteen hours per week is expected from the students and the daily schedule will vary. Amnesty International, Red Cross, Immigrant groups, Women's groups, disabled groups (mobility and visually), children's groups and marginal areas are among the volunteer opportunities offered to Gap Year Abroad students in Spain. Students may choose their area of service according to availability. Students also participate in a group volunteer project each semester in Sevilla. They work with the CIEE Resident Coordinator to determine the theme of the project.

In Santiago, Gap Year Abroad students teach ESL to Dominican students ten hours per week. They will be prepared through a three hour session of suggested methods and a brief introduction of service concepts. Students will work in an urban community service organization ten hours per week. The last week of the program will involve a community service project with the rural "Jardín de los Niños" or on a Peace Corps site.
