Each High School Abroad host country has a Ministry of Education that controls the curricula for all students throughout the country. In order to be sure that your U.S. school is able to grant credit for courses completed abroad, it’s important to work closely with your school counselor.
In order to receive school credit for the courses taken abroad, the following is advised:
- Schedule an appointment with your school counselor to gain approval for study abroad. Your U.S. school will determine whether you will receive credit for coursework taken abroad and how the grades received abroad will be translated on your U.S. transcript. Ideally, grades should not be transferred directly, as grading systems abroad will not factor into a U.S. grade point average easily.
- CIEE will not be able to determine the specific classes you will take while abroad. However, some information about the national curriculum in each country is available, and it’s important to know that there often isn’t as much flexibility to choose individual courses within the curriculum as you might be accustomed to. Course content and the sequence in which it’s covered may be different from what your school offers--presenting the opportunity for a different and valuable education experience! Students often complete some graduation requirements, such as English and U.S. History, prior to or upon returning from High School Abroad.
- You will register for all classes when you arrive in your host country. Once settled into the proper courses and levels, you should email the class schedule back to your home school.
- You will not receive an official transcript from your host high school. Instead, request a list of courses taken and grades received from a school official and bring it back with you at the end of your study abroad program.
