“…I thought that it was pretty cool that I was able to negotiate around a European country better than my European friends! After three months of being the only non-Italian speaking kid in a high school of a thousand Italian kids and generally feeling like a cretin, I could actually communicate across cultures. What a confidence-builder! My five months as an exchange student in Italy were my first steps towards becoming a citizen of the world.”
