Kiss the Blarney Stone for the gift of eloquence and Irish charm. There are many stories about the Blarney Stone's origin, but you'll have even more stories to tell after you attend an Irish high school and live with a host family in and around the colorful city of Cork.

the program

ciee support

The High School Abroad program is the best way for you to become a global citizen. Our Irish partner organization carefully selects and screens their host families. Students will be placed in and around Cork's city center and in suburban areas around Cork. Students will be placed based on the information provided in the application. Each student will be assigned a local coordinator who is a staff member at the student's host school. Local coordinators provide supervision and support for the students during their stay.

orientation

Orientation will take place in Boston one day before departure. Orientation consists of a comprehensive program covering important topics such as an introduction to your host country, health and safety, tips on how to adjust to a new culture and language, the academic program, and getting to know other high school students going to the same country. The rest of the time is spent on sightseeing in the area, restaurants and evening activities. Students will be met at the airport and housed in hotels with other participants. CIEE staff will stay in the hotel with the students and will accompany them to their overseas check-in. They will be met in Ireland by our program staff abroad and transferred on to their final destination for a local orientation.

ciee excursions

Although not part of the CIEE program, optional excursions and cultural activities for CIEE participants and other exchange students may be offered. Participation will be the participants' own expense.

placements

CIEE participants will be placed in public or private schools located in Cork's city center and in the suburban areas surrounding Cork. An attempt will be made to place participants in schools with the best match for their home school curriculum. Homestay placements will be as near as possible to the participant's school, in many cases within walking distance. Support and mentorship beyond the host family and school will be provided by the Local Coordinator. As a staff member of the host high school, he/she will be in regular contact with CIEE students and will report back to CIEE and the natural parents.
