study abroad in china for U.S. high school students
China—ancient civilization, modern economic power, fascinating culture, warm people—you’ll get a sense of it all through a semester or a year enrolled in a Chinese middle school (the equivalent of an American high school). Schools in two large cities have offered enrollment to international students, as they simultaneously promote their global education curriculum and share Chinese language and culture.
Depending on your interests, academic qualifications, and prior Chinese language study, you’ll be placed in a school offering either a full-immersion program or some classes taught in English along with daily Mandarin study. Schools are located in Zhengzhou and Shanghai. Zhengzhou, a modern city of more than six million is the capital of Henan province. It’s also the site of one the world’s most ancient cities and what some claim is the birthplace of China’s urban civilization, dating from the mid-14th century BCE. Today, it’s the economic and educational center of the province, as well as a major transportation hub for Central China.
Shanghai, home to 7 million in the city’s core, was historically called the “Paris of the East” for its cosmopolitan atmosphere. Shanghai’s connection with the West began in the mid-1800’s with the opening of trading concessions by the British, French, and Japanese. At one time the busiest port in Asia, the city is now an international business center and tourist destination.
