Participants will live with a Chinese host family on the weekends. During the week you’ll live in a single-sex school dormitory along with other students from your school. This is an excellent opportunity to make Chinese friends and to practice your language skills. Accommodations typically house four students to a room, with meals taken in the school canteen. Student meals offer noodles, rice, dumplings, fish, chicken, along with fruits and vegetables. Internet is available. Be prepared for an academic atmosphere, since Chinese students take homework seriously!
Host families are responsible for providing a safe and accepting environment for their host student as a member of their family. Our partner in China carefully visits, screens, and interviews all families who wish to open their homes to CIEE students. While Chinese host families receive a small stipend, they offer to host students because of their interest in learning about new cultures building relationships with their host “son” or “daughter”.
CIEE defines hosts as single parents, couples with or without children, or retired persons, without restriction as to race, color, religion, economic status, or geographical location. We ask that you be open minded about your host family placement, and when filling out your application, supply us with as much information about yourself as possible to ensure that we are equipped with the information we need. Only in exceptional situations will host family placements be changed prior to departure.
