High School Study Abroad Programs and Gap Year Abroad Programs for U.S. Students

CIEE's high school study abroad programs and GAP year abroad programs provide U.S. high school students and recent graduates with an unforgettable experience of a lifetime. Since 1947, CIEE has sent over 50,000 U.S. youth to locations around the globe. These programs allow U.S. high school students and recent high school graduates to study abroad, work abroad, and/or volunteer to become fully immersed in the language, culture, and people of another country.

High School Study Abroad Programs

CIEE offers study abroad high school programs for U.S. students in eight destination countries: Australia, Brazil, Costa Rica, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Spain.

These study abroad programs are designed for individuals ages 15-18 years. Students get to:

  • Experience language study abroad while attending local schools,
  • Live with a native host family,
  • Choose from full school year (10 months) or high school semester abroad (5 month) options, and
  • Participate in local community activities.

Gap Year Abroad Programs for Recent U.S. High School Graduates

CIEE's Gap Year Abroad Programs (or Interim Year Abroad program) give recent high school graduates the opportunity to live, work, and/or volunteer abroad and expand their view of the world before pursuing college studies. Taking a Gap year abroad and/or pursing gap year volunteer work is a common practice among European students, and is now become more common with U.S. high school students.

CIEE offers Gap year abroad travel to: China, Japan, Chile, the Dominican Republic, France, Spain, and Costa Rica Internship.

Our programs include:

  • A five- to ten-month gap year opportunity
  • Living and sharing meals with a host family
  • Enrollment in a language immersion program or language classes
  • Gap year volunteer work doing community service
  • English teaching internship for select countries
  • Trips and excursions to important historical and cultural studies.
