Community Service Project

CIEE believes that volunteer service is an excellent way to become involved with the community and an important component of the USA High School Program. Students are required to complete eight hours of community service per semester. The following steps below are a guide to help you get started on your Community Project:

  • Find an organization - get suggestions from your Host Family/ Local Coordinator, and check out our suggestions below.
  • Once you have made your selection, call the organization and arrange a meeting. Ask your Host Family or Local Coordinator to accompany you on your first visit.
  • When you meet with the representative from your selected organization, explain what the ‘Community Project ’ is all about. Show them your information packet and the enclosed ‘Letter to the Organization’. Be sure to ask what kind of volunteer work you’ll be doing.
  • Once you decide that this is the place where you would like to volunteer, set up a schedule for the days that you will be working. Remember, you need to spend at least 8 hours per semester volunteering.
  • If you volunteer at more than one organization, please have an evaluation form filled out by each supervisor. All the forms can be downloaded on the right side of this page.
  • Make sure you get the name and phone number of the person who will be overseeing your work. This will be the person who will evaluate your participation at the end of the program.
  • Talk with your Host Family and Local Coordinator about transportation options. Remember to get a map and schedule if you will be taking public transportation.
  • Finally, you will only receive your certificate of completion for the USAHS Program when we have received your essay and Supervisor’s evaluation form.

Please send your forms to the address below before departing the program:

You may also send them as an email attachment to communityproject@ciee.org

There are many local organizations where you can help volunteer your time and energy. A good place to start is by looking at your school, YMCA, or community center's bulletin board.

In the past, students have volunteered at such organizations as:

  • Care Center/Nursing Home
  • Animal Shelter/Humane Society
  • YMCA/Sports Camps
  • Chamber of Commerce
  • Museums
  • Church, Temple
  • Library
  • After School Programs/Tutoring
