Research Projects

Research to increase understanding

CIEE has funded several research projects to increase our understanding of issues facing the field of international education, as well as establishing the Ping Doctoral Research Fellowship. Results are frequently presented for the first time at our annual conference, including those of three recent projects:

  • Research on employer attitudes about study abroad was carried out by CIEE President and CEO Stevan Trooboff, CIEE Chief Academic Officer Michael Vande Berg, and Jack Rayman of The Pennsylvania State University. The study showed that employers value study abroad in the hiring process, especially programs that are longer rather than shorter, and programs that feature both classroom and experiential learning.
  • Research focusing on student motivations, expectations, and goals for study abroad was conducted by Stevan Trooboff and Michael Vande Berg. Among other findings, the study identified the types of individuals and experiences that often motivate undergraduates to study abroad, and the types of expectations and goals that many students form prior to departure.
  • A CIEE-funded longitudinal study, carried out by R. Michael Paige and Gerald Fry, both of the University of Minnesota, explored the learning of students who had studied abroad 1, 5, and 10 years earlier. Focusing on the impact of study abroad on career development, educational attainment, the acquisition of knowledge and skills, and development of basic values and worldview, the study identified the importance both of learner demographics and of program destination, duration and “depth” (shallow vs. deep engagement) on long-range learning of students.
