About the Congress-Bundestag Scholarship for
U.S. Students

Jointly funded by the German Bundestag and the U.S. Congress, the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Program (CBYX) is a full scholarship exchange program that offers young Americans the opportunity to live with a host family and attend high school in Germany for a year. You could be one of 50 students chosen to represent the Southeast United States as a CBYX youth ambassador. Become fluent in German, learn another culture and expand your horizons to the world!

The 2016-2017 program year application will be available in Fall 2016. To be notified when the application becomes available, please provide us with your contact information below. Applying is simple, but to be eligible you must be a U.S. citizen, national or permanent resident, have a GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale, and be between the ages of 15 and 18 and 6 months by the start of the program in August 2016. Best of all, German language is not a requirement.

CBYX Orientation and German Experience

line about

CBYX scholarship recipients meet in Washington, D.C. for a three day pre-departure orientation. Here students get to know one another and are prepared for what to expect during their first few weeks in Germany. They participate in informational sessions and tour the city’s sites and monuments. As a group, the students fly to Germany where they begin a three-week language and cultural immersion camp. In this dorm-style setting students get their first taste of life in Germany. Staff and teachers introduce students to the language through morning instruction time and German culture during afternoon outings and excursions.

Students will meet again once they’ve assimilated into the German culture to share their experiences. They will be hosted on a mid-year meeting where they will join in team-building activities and cultural visits, and at an end of year meeting in Berlin where they will tour the city and view parliamentary sessions.

The Ambassador Project

line getting involved

Once in Germany, each CBYX student plans and carries out an Ambassador Project focused on the theme of what it means to be a U.S. youth ambassador. CBYX students give back to members of their community and some of the most successful projects have been focused on leaving an imprint in the form of education, art, or community service with the locals.
