Tutoring

Tutoring is a possibility for some exchange students who have ongoing difficulty adjusting to the academics at their host high school. For most exchange students, there is an initial period of adjustment. During this time, the student may struggle academically. The student may need some time to get used to the structure of classes, the English language or local accents that may sound unfamiliar, and the expectations in the U.S. classroom including homework, participation, and exams. If a student continues to struggle beyond the initial adjustment period of the program, or shows a more pronounced problem succeeding academically, CIEE may recommend tutoring. CIEE does value teacher and school recommendations regarding tutoring, and if you have concerns with a student’s academics, please be in touch with the Local Coordinators.

Local Coordinators may also seek assistance from teachers or schools in identifying local resources for tutoring, as it is our experience that school counselors and teachers are often knowledgeable of local resources for tutoring. The Local Coordinators may also check with the school regarding afterschool academic assistance to learn what other resources beyond tutoring may be available to the student. This information is often very valuable in assisting the student to get as much help as possible, and we greatly appreciate all of the academic support that host high schools are able to offer
