Program Rules and Policies

House rules are obvious for the family living by them, but not for the exchange student. CIEE encourages host families and program participants to sit down and discuss the expectations and house rules upon exchange student’s arrival.

CIEE requires our participants to follow the host family’s rules in the CIEE Program Rule #4: “Accept placement with a family of any race, creed, or color. Live as a member of your host family, respect the rules and customs of your host family, and accept the responsibilities given to you.”

CIEE has asked host families to treat their exchange student as they would treat their own child. This includes enforcing the house rules, which, if broken, may have consequences. Punishments for being late for curfew, abusing phone privileges, or not doing chores may result in “grounding” or being given added chores for a period of time. These are only typical examples of common punishments.

We understand that every family has its own household routine and expectations regarding the responsibilities and behavior of each family member. We ask that host parents require advanced knowledge of whom their children are with and what they will be doing before they permit the child to participate. Know that the natural parents and CIEE staff are relying on you as the primary caregiver and protector of the exchange student.

Most important is to be open in communicating with your student. If something bothers you, sit down and discuss it immediately. Remember, an exchange student will need to know things we take for granted. Keep this in mind during those first few weeks.
