Host Family Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs

No. But as a host family, you may deduct up to $50 on your tax return for each school month a student lives with you.

Many families consider hosting a “personal payment,” meaning that inviting an international student to live with them and learning about their culture is the real takeaway. Because so many families enjoy the hosting experience, the true reward isn’t financial, but it’s in growth and memories made.

Treat your exchange student like you would treat your own child. Make a chore chart, encourage study hours, bring them to school activities, and include them in your interests. It’s up to you if you’d like to involve them further in your life, such as going on trips. The students will also bring their own money, which can cover purchases like clothing, school supplies, and events with friends.

There are no fees to host an exchange student through the BridgeUSA High School program. Think of it as a volunteer opportunity you’ve taken on.

Costs would be limited to the basics, like meals or even increases in transportation or utility bills.

As a host parent, consider issues or conflicts with your student as a cultural learning experience. Have an open discussion with your student about your concerns.

For example, if your student comes home after curfew, treat it as a violation of your house rules. Explain your curfew rules and why they’re important. Explain that it’s common for American parents to want to know – in advance – all the details about a student’s plans and whereabouts.

You can also lean on your local coordinator, who can provide you with mediation services.

Need more support? CIEE is here to help:

No, you will not need to add your BridgeUSA High School student to your health insurance. Students pay fees to come to the U.S., and some of this cost covers CIEE’s in-house travel health insurance. It provides coverage against risks to international travelers such as accidents, sudden illnesses, and more.

Yes, you can take your exchange student on your family trips, but it is not a requirement of becoming a host family. A reminder that travel is only allowed with adult members of the host family, on a school sponsored activity, or with CIEE local coordinators. Any other type of travel must be approved by your local coordinator at least one (1) month in advance of the travel dates.

Yes, BridgeUSA High School students can share a bedroom with one sibling of the same gender. The room must be enclosed, and the student must have a bed to sleep on – not a futon or an air mattress.

While CIEE’s rules do not allow visits with family or friends during its five-month program, the 10-month program does allow visits after Jan. 1. This rule was instituted to help students adjust to their new environment and host family.

The only time a student may drive is while taking an official driver’s-education course during class hours with an instructor. CIEE program rules prohibit driving under any other circumstance, even with a licensed driver in the passenger seat. Violation will lead to immediate dismissal from the CIEE program and return to their home country.

No, the host family cannot require a student to attend religious services. If your religion is a major part of your life, you may want to try to match with a student who feels the same way.

If your student is not religious, or not a member of your religion, it may be a nice gesture to invite your student to go to church at least once, in order to spend time with your family. A good alternative – if the student does not wish to attend the actual service – is to suggest that they help take care of the children at church. This can help them fulfill their community-service requirement.

CIEE requires students to complete at least eight hours of community service per semester to encourage interaction, personal development, and cultural exchange. Ask what they like to do, how they can give back to the community, and to reflect on what it would mean. Your local coordinator also can help with ideas and contacts.
