Youth Ambassadors

The CBYX, YES, A-SMYLE and FLEX programs connect students in Washington, D.C. with the chance to see the American government in action.

YES

line YES

CIEE works along other host organizations in the AFS Consortium to organize a weeklong arrival orientation in August and re-entry meeting in D.C. for all YES students. In past years, a reception hosted by Senator Richard Lugar has been the closing celebration of the program, and CIEE YES students have previously given speeches at this event.

CBYX

line CBYX

In cooperation with German exchange organization Experiment e.V., meetings in our nation’s capital take place at the beginning and close of the CBYX program. These events include visits to national monuments, meetings with Congressional representatives, and briefings at the Department of State with the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and European Affairs officers.

A-SMYLE

line Asmyle

American Councils for International Education and CIEE organize a two-day re-entry workshop at the close of the A-SMYLE program. Last year, students attended a Civic Education Tour of Washington D.C. and visited memorials such as the Air Force Memorial. A-SMYLE students also have the chance to reflect on their experience of life in the U.S. and the role it will play in their lives before they return home to Serbia or Montenegro.

FLEX

line FLEX

FLEX students are welcome to enter an essay competition to attend the Civic Education Workshop, a special one-week meeting held annually in Washington, D.C. for approximately 100 FLEX students currently studying in the United States. This program is funded by the State Department and provides an opportunity for participants to gain a better understanding of some of the democratic concepts and values that are such an integral part of FLEX. Participants learn firsthand about the federal system of government and other important issues through discussions, briefings, and meetings on Capitol Hill. Finalists are selected through an essay contest held each fall. The workshop is held in late February or early March. This is an incredible opportunity that all FLEX students are encouraged to participate in!
