Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Program
CBYX is a scholarship program, funded by the U.S. Congress and the German Parliament (Bundestag), which brings German high school students to the United States and sends Americans to Germany for an academic year. Begun in 1983 as a way to help improve relations between the two countries, the goals of the program are to promote cultural & political understanding and foster leadership skills. Approximately 300 German students are selected to participate out of an applicant pool of almost 9,000. Students are 15-18 years old and come from a variety of economic, religious, and social backgrounds.
Originally, the number of students (300) reflected the number of congressional representatives & bundestag members. Scholarship recipients are hand-picked by their Bundestag representative.
Students are seen as ambassadors and are encouraged to establish a connection with the congressional/bundestag representative from the region in which they are placed.
PLEASE NOTE: This site is intended for German high school students traveling to the United States. If you are a U.S. stidents traveling to Germany, please visit the CIEE Congress-Bundestag site for outbound students.
