Host Organization Eligibility

There are a number of factors that go into deciding whether a potential employer is eligible to hire an intern through CIEE. Some of these factors are stipulated by the U.S. Department of State, others are standards CIEE has put in place to better serve the interns that are applying to our program. Your company most likely already meets these requirements.

To be eligible as an employer, your company must be able to provide a structured, practical training experience while abiding by some key program regulations. Because the purpose of the J-1 Intern program is to foster professional exchange, the employer is expected to ensure that the Training Plan is followed for the duration of the program.

As you would with any new employee or intern, you must also be able to provide:

  • A full-time, professional level position, involving not more than 20% clerical work
  • A proper workspace and any necessary equipment related to the proposed program
  • Ongoing professional supervision, evaluation, guidance, and support throughout the program
  • Orientation to the workplace and to the local community

Partner with CIEE and be confident that you will have access to the most qualified interns from abroad. With CIEE, you can be assured that your experience as a host organization is both simple and rewarding for your company and staff.
