Safety and Support

Our foremost concern as an organization is the welfare of the students on our programs. You can feel confident that CIEE with our 65 years of experience, is committed to providing safe and healthy study experiences.

CIEE's approach to health and safety is fourfold. First, CIEE conducts a careful safety evaluation of every program it runs. Next, we provide comprehensive and realistic information to prospective applicants so that they can make the most informed decisions regarding which program to participate in. When students arrive on site, CIEE conducts a thorough orientation that includes tips on reducing risk and handling difficult situations should they arise. Finally, program staff continuously monitors local conditions in order to provide guidance to participants throughout their stay.

CIEE has partnered with experts in producing resources that address health concerns for students who are thinking about studying abroad. As a founding member of the Interassociational Advisory Committee on Safety and Responsibility in Study Abroad, we’re committed to the operation of safe and secure study experiences.

While incountry we offer gap year abroad students support through a network of CIEE Study Center staff, local coordinators, and host families. Additionally, our staff at the CIEE office in Portland, Maine, is on call 24/7 to provide emergency support and resolve any issues that may arise.
