CIEE Essay Contest!
Recently, Americans celebrated both Martin Luther King Jr. Day (January 14) and Presidents Day (February 21). Among many things celebrated on these days, both holidays celebrate the qualities of leadership and tolerance in US society. We commemorate our leaders to remind us that in order for positive change to happen, in any society, tolerance and leadership are paramount. CIEE is posting an essay contest for CIEE Grants students in order to share what students have learned from these American holidays.

For more information about about deadlines and rules, please download the Word document. Essays are due by March 15th, 2006. Good Luck!

Hurricane Katrina
In response to the damage done by Hurricane Katrina, we know many of you are looking for ways to get involved with efforts to help those affected by the storm. CIEE is pleased that to hear many of you are already involved in activities and we encourage all of our high school exchange students to get involved. Your participation in locally organized activities is a great way to interact with members of your community while helping others in need. We encourage you to visit the Youth Service America website at www.ysa.org to find information about organizations that are helping young people get involved with relief efforts. We want to know how you are getting involved! Please send us stories about your activities and pictures, via regular mail or email. We will be posting selected pictures and stories at the CIEE FLEX website.

CIEE FLEX Essay Contests
There will be a couple of essay contests for CIEE students during the 2005-2006 program year. We encourage FLEX students to participate. These essay contests coordinate with other program elements (International Education Week and Global Youth Service Day) and US holidays (US holidays including Presidents Day and Martin Luther King Jr. Day). There will be prizes and the top essays will be posted on the CIEE FLEX website.

Global Youth Service Day (April 14 – 16 2006)
This is an annual international event that recognizes and mobilizes the year-round contributions of young people to build their communities through volunteer service.  FLEX students are strongly encouraged to participate in and organize events in their host communities in celebration of this event.
