Akram from Kyrgyzstan
Speedway High School, Indianapolis, Indiana
Akram worked with a teacher at his high school to present a workshop on Cultural and Religious Exchanges for Global Youth Service Day to give information about Islam to counter stereotypes about Islam to students and to help give a face of true Muslims. Akram wrote: “Islam is not all about killing people, but it’s a faith of billions who want peace; that it is not a faith that American Christians should be afraid of. I hoped our lesson helped some students to understand Islam and to fracture those stereotypes that they had before. Students were so patient and interested, answering their questions made me feel that I am making a difference in many ways.” |

Merim from Kyrgyzstan
Northwest High School, Justin, TX
On April 14th and 15th, Merim and fellow students at Northwest High School celebrated “Tolerance Awareness Day” by wearing colorful T-shirts with meaningful messages like, “Tolerate diversity," “We are all humans” and “ Respect one another.” Merim wrote: “We were spreading these ideas not only by wearing those special designed T-shirts by LIFT group, but also by explaining the purpose of that day. Being from a different culture and having different values, Tolerance Awareness Day was an incredible experience for me where I played a tiny part in a very influential and beneficial project. Which can lead to tolerance, not only between people, but also between countries and the continents, making the world a more perfect place." |
