Dr. E. Fuat Keyman is Professor of International Relations at Koç University. Professor Keyman, Director of Koç University's Center for Research on Globalization and Democratic Governance (CLODEM), works on topics related to democratization, globalization, international relations, civil society, and Turkey-European Union relations. The author of sixteen books and many dozens of articles, and a frequently invited speaker at international conferences in Turkey, Europe, the U.S. and Canada, Professor Keyman focused on the status of Turkish membership in the E.U., the role that Turkey might play as a broker in an eventual Middle East peace plan, and the changing nature of the relationship between Turkey and the U.S.

The Annual Reception was located in Sultanahmet, the historical center of Istanbul. We spent the evening exploring the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts, enjoying traditional Turkish music, wine, and food while socializing with colleagues. The Museum collection includes examples of Islamic calligraphy, tiles, and carpet, as well as ethnographic displays on various cultures in Turkey.

Featured Speaker: Jessica Lutz
Jessica Lutz (Delft, the Netherlands) moved to Istanbul after graduating from the University of Utrecht in Turkish Languages and Cultures. After a brief career at the Consulate General of the Netherlands, she turned to journalism in 1991. She wrote for Elsevier magazine, the Netherlands Press Association, and US News and World Report, and reported for a wide range of Dutch and Belgian radio stations, CBS, and the BBC. In 2002, she published a modern history of Turkey, The Golden Apple: Turkey between East and West. Her travelers' companion to Istanbul -- Faces of Istanbul: tales from a city between two continents -- appeared in 2008 (both in Dutch). English stories appeared in Tales from the Expat Harem, foreign women in modern Turkey (Dogan/Seal 2005) and in Istanbul Noir (Akashic Books/Everest, 2008). Since 2003, Lutz has been the correspondent in Turkey for the main nightly news program on Dutch TV, NOS-journaal. Recently her first thriller, Happy Hour, came out in the Netherlands.

At this year’s breakfast plenary, the 2008-09 Ping Doctoral Research Fellows presented their research. Chelsea Bailey Shea addressed "Factors that Affect American Students' Participation in Study Abroad" and Jinous Kasravi reported on her research "Factors Influencing the Decision to Study Abroad for Students of Color: Moving Beyond the Barriers." The CIEE Ping Doctoral Research Fellowships provide support for doctoral research focused on U.S. undergraduate study abroad. Funded through a small endowment, the Doctoral Research Fellowships are named after Dr. Charles Ping, a gifted teacher and scholar, a tireless advocate for the internationalization of U.S. higher education, President Emeritus of Ohio University, and a long-time former Chairman of the CIEE Board of Directors.
