New Semester Programs—Opening Spring 2010

Berlin, Germany
CIEE Study Center at Freie Universität Berlin
[Language and Culture]
The Language and Culture program at the CIEE Study Center in Berlin provides challenging and stimulating courses in a range of subjects with the aim of increasing students’ understanding of contemporary cultural realities in Berlin, Germany, and Europe, as well as language courses to improve students’ facility with the German language. Students will be able to express how their own views of Germany were tested, expanded, and transformed as a result of both in-and out-of class learning.

Naples, Italy
CIEE Study Center at the University of Naples “L’Orientale”
[Classical Studies]
The CIEE Classical Studies program will provide students with the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the literature and civilization of the ancient Greeks and Romans through English-taught courses as well as visits to important ancient cultural sites in the Naples and Campania region. Students will participate in ongoing archeological digs with which the University is affiliated. For students with advanced language skills, direct enrollment in a wide variety of courses provides an additional opportunity to immerse themselves in the culture and language.

Naples, Italy
CIEE Study Center at the University of Naples “L’Orientale”
[Liberal Arts]
The goals of the Liberal Arts program are to enable students to develop their ability to communicate in Italian through intensive language instruction, and broaden their knowledge of contemporary and historical Italy, particularly Southern Italy, in content courses taught in Italian. Excursions to cultural attractions in the fascinating city of Naples and the Campania region, along with overnight field trips to locations such as Rome, the Amalfi Coast, or Sicily, provide students with the ability to demonstrate basic cultural and intellectual literacy. This includes background on Italian history, cultural symbols and values, and intellectual trends, as well as familiarization with timely social and political issues in Italy.

Khon Kaen, Thailand
CIEE Study Center at Khon Kaen University
[Community Public Health]
The aim of the Community Public Health program is to help students understand the complexities and challenges faced by the public health community in Northeast Thailand. This program is designed to provide students with a broad overview of public health management and community public health issues in Thailand and Southeast Asia. Students will apply theoretical frameworks covered in the classroom to competently carry out community health assessments, develop and implement a public health project, and assess its impact.

New Summer Programs—Opening Summer 2010

Shanghai, China
CIEE Study Center at East China Normal University
[Accelerated Chinese Language]
The Accelerated Chinese Language program will accelerate the language ability of intermediate- and advanced-level Chinese language students, allowing them to complete a second or third year of Chinese in one summer. These goals are achieved through intensive, daily Chinese language coursework and other curricular activities. Students will also apply these language skills in everyday situations in Shanghai and while traveling around China.

Legon, Ghana
CIEE Study Center at the University of Ghana
[Ghanaian Studies]
The Ghanaian Studies summer program is designed for students to gain an appreciation of Ghana’s rich culture and tradition; learn how slavery, colonization, independence, and Pan-Africanism have influenced today’s society; and develop a better understanding of Ghanaian people through the academic courses, co-curricular activities, and volunteer projects.

Cape Town, South Africa
CIEE Study Center at the University of Cape Town
[South African Studies]
The South African Studies summer program provides students with a range of academic, intellectual, and intercultural experiences that enable them to witness and take part in the complex process of transformation in South Africa. Through an innovative course, volunteer project, and exploration of the various communities in and around Cape Town, students become participants in, rather than mere observers of, this dynamic and evolving environment. Through this process, students gain a comprehensive understanding of the evolving story that is South Africa.
