About Naples

Framed by nearby Mount Vesuvius, Naples is squeezed onto on a narrow strip of land with the city rising almost vertically from the Bay of Naples. Traversing the narrow streets of the most densely populated city in Europe, one can feel transported to Roman times and sometimes a third world country. While it has a reputation as a tough city, Naples is known for its stunning Baroque art and architecture, and its cuisine. The central historical district where students live and study has been renovated and revitalized in recent years.

Where You'll Study

University of Naples ā€œL’ Orientale"

Founded in 1732 by a missionary returned from China, the Università degli studi di Napoli L’ Orientale (University of Naples “L’ Orientale," or Orientale) is based in historic central Naples. The Orientale is a center for the study of foreign languages and cultures, not only Asian but Middle Eastern, African, Mediterranean, and even North American, that is unique in Italy and has few rivals in Europe. There are approximately 10,500 students and 300 faculty. CIEE students have access to the University’s libraries, computer center, student canteen, and sports facilities.

Thoughts From Abroad
