The phenomenon referred to as The Celtic Tiger or Ireland’s Economic Miracle transformed the Republic of Ireland from one of the poorest countries in Western Europe to one of the wealthiest. With the demise of the Tiger, what now for Ireland in the 21st century? It is generally accepted by economists and political commentators alike that the “Tiger” has exhausted itself and now needs to rest awhile. This seminar will examine Irish Society as it has evolved in relation to this phenomenon. It will analyze the country’s historic and cultural traditions, and explore the problems associated with rapid political, socio/cultural and economic change and its aftermath.
This 8-day seminar begins and ends in Dublin and includes a visit to Belfast.
