Rationale
Founded in 1947, the Republic of India is the world’s largest democracy and a burgeoning economic superpower. Home to an ancient civilization (birthplace of two of the world’s great religions) and celebrating a half-century as a modern nation, this is a land of contrast and contradictions. There are few countries on earth, which offer such diversity of languages, cultures, and traditions. India’s program of economic liberalization is a decade old, and the country is currently undergoing federal restructuring.
Hyderabad and Bangalore, two of India’s major urban centers, are at the heart of India’s ongoing hi-tech revolution. This seminar gives you an opportunity to explore the common threads in these two cybercities by situating the ongoing information technology (IT) development within the socio-historical and cultural frameworks of these cities. Learn how the pace of development has played a major role in attracting overseas investment and examine the impact of this growth on the landscape as well as the society and culture of Hyderabad and Bangalore. Visit BPOs/IT firms; talk to workers at call centers; interact with academics and journalists who study this phenomenon; and visit NGOs founded by major IT firms to reach out to the larger community, in an attempt to get a better understanding of India’s hi-tech revolution.
