The Final Round Table:
A highlight of the France seminar is a final roundtable discussion with lecturers addressing some of the larger questions regarding the seminar theme. Questions to be covered include:
- What issues can be fruitfully addressed through the comparing the situations of Jews and Muslims in France? What are the limits of this approach?
- Is there a historical parallel between the situation of Jews and Muslims in France?
- Are anti-Semitism and Islamophobia related phenomena, or are they fundamentally different in nature? What can we learn from the comparison? Do these kinds of prejudice differ from other forms of racism and prejudice, or is it more fruitful to look at them in the context of racism and prejudice in general?
- What can we learn from the comparison between the France and the U.S.?
- Does it make sense to look for a Jewish Islamophobia, or a Muslim anti-Semitism? Or are these marginal phenomena?
- How does the international context (Israeli-Arab conflict, global Islamist movements) influence the situation of Jews and Muslims in France?
